- Preview

A grid-based sequencer with two playheads - one for each axis. Add ‘triggers’ to the grid to build patterns. Control playhead behavior to play grid pattern in different ways.

What is This Patch?
XY is a sequencer. It uses a grid to play sounds in time. Add ‘triggers’ (sounds) to the grid by first navigating the grid with two knobs to a desired location. Then place a trigger on the grid by playing a keyboard key. The keyboard key plays a drum sample and a synth simultaneously. The grid is ‘read’ by two playheads. One playhead reads the grid in the X axis and the other playhead in the Y axis. The grid can be as large as 8x8 steps or as small as 1x1. The playheads can be set to read the grid from the low to high spots (1, 2, 3, 4, ..), high to low (8, 7, 6, 5 …), or back and forth.

Depending on your pattern and the direction of playheads, the X and Y playheads will read an individual grid trigger simultaneously and you will hear it once, or they will read the same trigger at different times and you will hear it twice. Interesting patterns can be made by using a grid of irregular size (e.g. 8x3), setting the playheads to different directions, designing a grid pattern such that triggers are not read simultaneously by each playhead, or combinations of all three.

How Do I Use This Patch?
There are two pages for this patch. ‘Main’ shows a grid, oscilloscope of the currently playing sounds, sample decay envelope (in percentage), and current BPM. The ‘Options’ page has controls for grid X and Y sizes (1-8 steps), and X & Y playhead direction.
The Aux button starts and stops the sequencer playheads (X & Y). The keyboard plays a sample and a synth at the same time. The samples are stored in the patch’s ‘Sounds’ folder. (1.wav is played by the low C key. 24.wav is played by the high B key. These files are replaceable).

If you’re on the Main page, use Knob1 to drive around the grid’s X-axis. Knob2 drives in the Y-axis. When you get to a desired spot in the grid, add a trigger by playing the keyboard. Whichever key is pressed last on a given grid spot will be played by the playheads. A long-press by any key will clear that spot on the grid. A long Aux press will clear the whole grid. Once you have added events to your grid, press Aux to start playheads. A short press on Aux will stop playheads. Knob3 sets a trigger’s decay time. Knob4 sets tempo (unless your Organelle is receiving MIDI clock).

If you’re on the Options page, set the grid size with Knobs 1-2. Knobs 3-4 will set the playhead directions for X-Y axis respectfully. If you change settings on the Options page while the sequence is playing, you will hear these changes immediately. Stopping and then restarting sequence playback will reset the playheads back to 1 so your pattern may sound different!

If you like a pattern, don’t forget to ‘Save’ in the Storage menu.

Tech Specs
The ‘Updown’ playhead direction setting plays the ‘ends’ of the grid once before moving on towards center of grid. For example, if you had a grid that was four spots wide in the X-axis, the playhead would play as follows (if starting from 1): 1, 2, 3, 4, 3, 2, 1, 2… rather than 1, 2, 3, 4, 4, 3, 2, 1, 1, 2… This is noted so that you’ll know Updown setting will be out of phase with the Up or Down settings, but eventually they will end up at the 1 spot simulaneously.

If you want to add your own samples to the patch they are in the 'Sounds' folder. The numbers correspond to the keys. 1.wav is assigned to the low 'C' key and move up from there.

Link enabled for syncing with other devices on a shared wireless network.

MIDI Start and Stop commands will start sequencers. Grid notes are sent out as MIDI notes.

Fun Idea
Send a MIDI sequence from an external device and then drive around the grid. The grid will fill up with the MIDI sequence in a random/fun/cool way.

Record samples, slice them up on the fly, and weave them across time with other sample slices all while arpeggiating and looping them!

WHAT IS THIS PATCH?
It is an improvement of the original Distributor patch. This patch has three main functions: 1. Records an audio sample to each key; 2. Slices up those samples and arpeggiates them; 3. Interweaves slices from one sample with other sample slices as you play keyboard (or the sequencer).

HOW DO I USE THIS PATCH?
Patch controls are available from the ‘Aux Menu.’ The Aux Button controls the ‘Aux Menu’. When you press Aux for 0.2 seconds, a new menu is displayed on OLED Screen for as long as you hold Aux. The available Aux Menu Commands depends on which 'page' you are currently viewing.

To select a Menu command/Page, use the Top Row of Organelle keys. There are 10 possible commands selected by the 10 keys. The low C# key selects Top Left command. The High A# key selects the Bottom Right command. The Command Grid is to be read from top left to bottom, then top right to bottom.

The main patch controls are available in the Right Column. They are PlayMode, RecMode, and Options.

PlayMode page has controls for:
Ramp: Sets pitch envelope for each slice. Slice playback pitch ramps up from 0 to the current tuning over the 0-500ms.
Arp: Selects pattern of how each sample slice is arpeggiated up or down octaves.
Tuning: adjust global playback speed up and down two octaves.
BPM: Default is internal. This will change if you are sending the patch external MIDI clock or have joined a Link session.

RecMode page has controls for:
Monitor Vol: Sets the volume level for monitoring (audio thru) of the incoming audio.
A visual keyboard represents the current record destination.
With this page selected, the following additional Aux command is available: RecordArm - ’Arms’ recording of new sample (aka Record Enable). Once armed, recording starts when incoming audio level crosses amplitude threshold. Pressing Aux or Foot Switch will arm. Pressing either again after arm will cancel recording. If you like a recording, be sure to use the ‘Save’ command in system command so you can revert back to it in case of accidental record.

The Options page has controls for:
Monitor Vol: Sets the volume level for monitoring (audio thru) of the incoming audio. This controls the same parameter as the instance on the RecMode page.
Playback Mode: Selects sample start location. Reset starts playback from the beginning. Progressive starts playback from the previous endpoint. With Reset chosen, you will not hear entire sample due to sample length, Tempo, and Beat Division settings. With Progressive the entire sample will eventually be played.
Beat Divisions: Sets slice length. Relative to Tempo.
Max. Record Length: Sets maximum of how long you want a specific sample to be. Samples recording can always be ended earlier than maximum by pressing Aux during recording.

The following Aux commands are available on the Left Column from the PlayMode and Options pages:

Seq:Play/Stop - Plays or Stops selected sequence

Rec:Off/Armd - Controls Sequence Recording. When selected, Sequence is first Record Armed (Enabled). LED will be Pink. Sequencer is waiting for knob adjustment, key press or incoming MIDI note. When knob adjusted, key pressed or MIDI Note received, Recording starts. LED is Red. To end recording, press Aux (new seq begins looping immediately). LED will be Green and flash White on quarter note. Sequence length will be quantized to nearest quarter note.

Dub:Off/On – Overdub on top of existing sequence. Counts in 3 Sec before starting recording. To end recording, press Aux and sequence begins looping immediately.

Undo – Reverts Sequence to previous state. If this command says 'Undid' you cannot 'undo' further.

Latch: Off/On - Toggles between playing segments after releasing keys or not.

The Bottom Row of keys selects one of 14 Sequence ‘slots’ to record to. Changing sequence slot will change the number that precedes the command in the left column.

TECH SPECS:
Sample slice playback will always start on the next selected beat division. A general rule of thumb: You will hear a slice sooner if you have 16th notes selected than if you had 'whole' notes selected.

For those users who become comfortable with the Aux menu: If you press both Aux and Menu command/Sequence Slot key before the menu is displayed, your choice/command will be accepted.

If you want to add samples to the patch instead of recording them, they are in the 'Sounds' folder. The numbers correspond to the keys. 1.wav is assigned to the low 'C' key and move up from there.

Sequenced knob adjustments are sent out as CC messages on the System MIDI Out Channel. Knob1 = CC21, Knob2 = CC22, Knob3 = CC23, Knob4 = CC24.
If sending MIDI clock to Organelle or part of a Link session: Otherwise BPM is ‘Off.’

A recorded track is automatically sliced into up to 24 segments (one per key) depending on where transients are detected. Create up to 14 possible stored sequences from segments.

What is this patch?

This patch has two main functions: 1. Record audio and automatically slice it up into as many as 24 segments based on where the patch detects transient sounds in the recording, and 2. Use keyboard or the sequencer to play segments in new ways/orders. ‍

How Do I Use this Patch?

Use the Encoder to navigate between the Sample View/Rec and Jam Options pages. Sample View/Rec shows a waveform and lists how many segments (sections between detected transients) there are. The Jam Options page shows speed, pitch, segment length, and input monitor controls.

Additional patch controls are available from the ‘Aux Menu.’ The Aux Button controls the ‘Aux Menu’. RcIn:Arm - ’Arms’ recording of new sample (aka Record Enable). Once armed, recording starts when incoming audio level crosses amplitude threshold. Pressing Aux after arm will cancel recording. If you like a recording, be sure to use the ‘Save’ command in system command so you can revert back to it in case of accidental record. Recordings can be 12000 milliseconds long or a maximum 24 segments. If recording has less than 24 segments, the segments will be repeated across the keyboard.

Tech Specs:

For those users who become comfortable with the Aux menu: If you press both Aux and Menu command/Sequence Slot key before the menu is displayed, your choice/command will be accepted.

Layer three synth/sampler Tracks together. A Track is both the sound engine (eight synths/samplers) and 14 possible stored sequences. Possibilities!

What is this patch?‍

This patch has three 'Tracks.' A Track is both the sound engine (eight synths/samplers) and 14 possible stored sequences. Tracks may be played individually or all at once.

For each Track A, B, C, select a synth/sampler to play (Knob1). Dial up a track's synth/sampler settings(Knob2-4). Record to one of the Track's sequence 'slots' using the Aux Menu (more on this below). Repeat for the other two tracks. Create variation by:

Recording new sequences for a given Track
Selecting other sequences while the other two Tracks continue to play the same sequences.
Changing the synth/sampler on a currently playing sequence.

Control the volume of each Track via the Mix page. There is a fun LFO mix control which automatically fades Tracks in/out at the LFO rate.

The BPM page has a tempo control and metronome control. Dial up a specific BPM so the sequencer can quantize sequence length to the nearest quarter note. Alternatively, if you send the Organelle MIDI clock or join a Link session, sequence playback speed will be synced to that external tempo.

If Mix/BPM Page is 'On' the following Aux commands are available:

PlayAll - Plays all three tracks' selected sequence.
StopAll– Stops all of the three tracks.

The PlayAll and StopAll commands are not the same as turning on/off all sequencers in Tracks A+B+C individually. The last OLED screen line may say ‘Stopped All’ even though one or more sequencers is playing.

The Bottom Row of keys will not control anything.

Tech-y Specs:

There is a Transpose control for each Track. It is located at the end of the list of synths/samplers (Knob1 all the way right). The keyboard is muted when this control is selected. Take care not to have ‘hung’ MIDI notes if you enter Transpose control with sequence playing, etc.

For those users who become comfortable with the Aux menu: If you press both Aux and Menu command/Sequence Slot key before the menu is displayed, your choice/command will be accepted.

Footswitch: N/A

MIDI: ‘Live’ keypresses (MIDI notes) are sent out on the MIDI Out Channel configured in System/Settings/MIDI Setup menu. Sequences send MIDI notes out on different channels. Track A sequenced notes are sent on Ch. 1. Track B sequences are sent on Ch. 2. Track C sequences are sent on Ch. 3. You can modify these channels by editing the [pd Sequencers] file in main.pd. There are comments showing which objects to modify.

Some fun ideas:

The tracks can play any sequence - they don't all have to play the same sequence slot: You might find that Sequences A2, B7, C13 is the combination you are looking for. Or maybe it is Sequences A5, B1, C12!
You can use the same synth/sampler across all three tracks.
You can play the keyboard on the Mix page. It will play the three voices (one from each Track)! If you have sequences playing you can play on top of them. Things can get weird quick, but if you make each track a variant of the same synth/sampler, you can dial up some nice combinations. The only problem with this feature is that you will want to sequence your sounds here and there is no fourth Track to sequence this! One solution is to sequence with MIDI from an external MIDI device or DAW.
You can record sequences with only knob adjustments (no notes) for loops of automation.
